Gain wisdom and strength in the reality of getting older.

This book illuminated my hope for a possible chance of growing to reach my ultimate goal of a healthy age of "102" (I am 40 years young). Mr. Chopra gives needed advice on how to develop awareness toward positive changes in everyday life. He also shares His knowledge on how to eliminate the fears of growing older, with wisdom, strength, courage, and the ability to accept each new day as a gift from the creator. There is so much valuabe information in this book., I use it as a health and spiritual reference guide, and an emotional uplifter, when I feel out of balance. This book is so much of a necessity in my daily life that I went out and purchased it on audio cassette, so that I can absorb the valuable wisdom at my convience. To my suprised, Beetle "George (My Sweet Lord) Harrison" wrote and sang the three beautiful songs for the 6 tapes/audio version of the book. Get the book or audio set, which is packed with truely valuable information. You won't be dissapointed. Also, "any" reading material with Deepaks' name on it is worth investing in.

I read this book a long time ago and just reread it again recently. I think there is a lot to be gained from reading a book like this, just to stimulate ideas on what is possible if nothing else. For that alone I'd give it five stars. I noticed a few reviewers dismissed this book and Deepak as "unscientific" and a "quack," but I think they're missing the point. Not many of the great advancements in human history were considered practical, or do-able, when they were first considered. I believe someone already mentioned some of the technologies that we now take for granted - like flying. Or for that matter, vaccinations and any other advancement that was once unheard of - or even thought of. It's by looking forward and exploring new ideas that we move humanity forward. I don't think that anything in this book were dangerous or unhealthy. I do think it was a great example of daring, positive thinking on what is possible. And that can only be a good thing in the end, whether Chopra's ideas prove to be true, or not. I liked the book and I highly recommend it!

When I first read the book, I could not put it down. My only adverse comments are that the brilliant supporting researches which are quoted in the book could have been referenced similar to a research publication. Then it could gain creditibility with the medical and scientific community. Neverthless it is a great book for liberating people abilities. Well written and a joy to read.
Springboard to Transformation

When I pulled this book out of my bookshelf, sitting unread for 3 years, I was unable to work, having been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea - all at the same time. In very simplistic terms, which was all I could manage at that time, Deepak re-opened a forgotten window into the power of my own mind, reawakened my understanding that I was responsible for my own health and my own energy. Ageless Body, Timeless Mind pried up several scales in my body/mind armor against the knowledge that I had created my own illness... After that, wow! Waves of realizations and connections gained momentum... I am well today, feeling and looking 15 years younger than I did three years ago - and I'm just getting started! If you are so imprisoned that you need a 12-Step, ABC type program to understand it, read it anyway! If you can't get a grip on this book, that's great news! It seeped INto me, and what seeped OUT was something entirely different! There is no practical advice, no concrete prescription. To do that would be to limit the power of your mind, which is what the entire book is NOT about. Nowhere in this book does Deepak make the claim that these ancient ideas were invented by him... this book is simply one more manifestation, one more prick at the Memory of the Knowing that exists beyond time and three-dimensional man. It's a pearl, dropped into the pond of consciousness... what you do with the ripples on that pond or the murk that the pearl may cause to surface when it hits the bottom... that is entirely up to you - and your willingness to discover what lies within the amorphous...

I read this book in German and now in English. This is strong stuff, but will rock your world view. Dr. Chopra has linked the findings of quantum physics to your life, your body, your health. Result: absolutely empowering. There are other books out there, but it is hard to find one where wisdom empowers you directly to perceive things differently, to set new goals, to feel different. In other words: To grow. Outstanding, heavily recommended.

The positive mental as well as habitual approaches recommended would inevitably help to improve health in general. Great Stuff for all health conscious people. |
Best available scientific secrets to look and feel young

Hi Guys, In India I have seen people teach, and write on complex subjects as matematics in the age of 80s and 90s. Though India is nowhere in high life expectancy ranking. Some people I have noticed are so precise in their discernment and communication skills in 80s. These people are invariably spiritual. They observe weekly fasts etc. They are respected for their knowledge. As Deepak points out the attitude of "I'm more responsible and progressing in wisdom" has made these people commited to groom their knowledge and teach them clearly to young people in a way that they love and respect them. These people are also so kind at heart. Deepak declares "Love is the ultimate Truth" in his teachings. In this book the aging process is scienticifically explained so clearly. I was astounded to read the passage about Ayurveda, especially "Ayurveda is not focussed on healing, but to defeat death and open up the possibility of immortality". The facts about organ renewal, hormones of aging, metabolizing time are very informative.

Chopra's "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" is a truly courageous thesis. How well he manages to argue it is a different matter... After all, Chopra dared to take on the most fundamental axiom of humankind - that of mortality!
Page 53: "Inside everyone lies the hidden conviction "I must age, which operates so powerfully on us that our bodies conform to it." Citing the Indian sage, Shankara, he continues: "People grow old and die because they see others grow old and die." Chopra summarizes: the inevitability of aging is an artifact of cultural conditioning. This is the problem that he sets out to solve.
A gutsy proposition! Kudos to Chopra for this early 1990s effort. What's the relevance of the timeline? The early 90s were the time that the quantum physics was riding the high of its popularization. Chopra's arguments - taken in their scientifically historical context - are an eloquent intertwine of the Quantum Physics and the Buddhist doctrine of Sunyata (emptiness). He mounts an eloquent, encyclopedic-in-its-breadth argument, in a clear and engaging matter. In my reading of this argument, he redefines mind as a distributed neuronal network - mind isn't just brain, it is wherever the nerves are, and thus no province of body is potentially outside of the central command of mindful intention and awareness. He posits that whatever is withing the field of awareness is within conscious control and proposes a curriculum of awareness-building.
What a valiant, triumphant, daring dissertation on the mind-over-body possibilities!
The courage of this effort is in self-exposure: Chopra now has to become the Houdini that escapes time... What a mandate!
Regardless of what you think of Chopra's thesis at a glance, I encourage you to read the book. It's a great overview of mind-body research, of the interplay of physics/immunity/psychology, an inspiring big-picture, a poignant exploration of our entrappment in our cultural conditioning (even if age happens to be an exception to it).
The book has many a great line. "The effect of conditioning is always the same: choice becomes restricted." "To stimulate one cell is to stimulate all." "What is outside our awareness cannot be controlled." "Any appearance of separation is only the product of the limitation of our senses." "The dance is forever and the dance is you."
Medicine, psychology, poetry, epistemology, East-West synthesis!
Nice invigorating read but don't cancel your health insurance just yet.

This fascinating book about the truth of nature and the nature of truth, like a mirror of timeless reality, helped me to see my life more clearly. It helped me to see how my own thoughts have the power to age me or restore my youth. And it helped me to create a plan for a long and healthy life, based on the power of the mind to extend beyond perceived boundaries to shape a new reality. It gave me a glimpse into the nature of miracles. This practical and astounding book delivered on its promise -- the first sentence in the book -- to take the reader on a journey of discovery. Wow. That was some journey. I'm going to read it again.

I first read this book in 1994, the year after it was first published. It was then that I found it quite inspiring and I still do. For anyone that needs to know that there are things about ourselves to believe in, other than what we can see and feel, this book will show you the grand possibilities that exist. It is awe-inspiring and all-inspiring to be able to recognize just how vast the science of health and healing truly is...and this book is simply the introduction to it all. For those of you that need "proof" about everything in life, I think you would do well to try this book on for size and see how you can open your mind to the alternatives and the things that make our world as complex and as wonderful as it truly is. The science is explained in an easy to read format and Dr. Chopra's spiritual wisdom is an extra bonus. You will begin to see life from a multi-faceted perspective and I do believe it will help you to become more optimistic about your health and your life in general. I highly recommend it.
To understand your immortal nature...

Reviewer: Othon Leon,
In this wonderful book (a must!), Deepak Chopra explains in a very understandable way and from A to Z, the difference between growing old and growing sick, being the last one, the accepted condition in our Western cultures for anyone over 45 years old, but amazingly, this does not have to be... it's actually a matter of awareness! biological age depends on psychological age he says, implying that knowledge of true nature is essential to overcome the fear and sorrow feelings that are really responsible for our cells' inability at a certain point of age (beginning at around 30 years old) to rejuvenate themselves; "the habit of fear has sunk so deep that the body remembers to carry it out, even when the mind is resisting with all its might".
We are not these bodies, but the thoughts that create it and those ones come from the Field... and it is right here where this book grows interesting; unity is what we should always aim for. Our physical world and our inner world (quantum) are closely related, forming the unity that gives consistency to the world we perceive, but perception is reality and ours is conditioned to think we are trapped in time and space so, we grow old and die because we expect that. We interpret that as the end, while it is really transformation. The moment we understand that the nature of our awareness is timeless, this process of growing old can stop and even reverse. It's our unique capacity of consciousness among all living creatures, which gives us this possibility.
After reading this book, I can also see, that in a couple hundred years from now, many aspects of our Western, modern medicine, will be seen as not very different to that from the middle ages in our eyes today... a wonderful read that will give you a completely different view of life, death, health, sickness, aging, healing and eternity. A tool, more than a book. |

Dr.Chopra is an extraordinary man who can expostulate on both 20th century Chronobiology and Ayurveda (the 4000 year old Indian healing science), as well as contextualize them with respect to Unified Field Theory. This book is a tribute to his insights into the holistic nature of the ageing problem that has haunted humans through the millennia. He explains to the layman in limpid prose, how to use this ancient wisdom of the seers and postmodern quantum science of today to become ageless (or eternal if you will). He is truly a Yogi , and it is baffles me that he is among us in normal society, writing books for us , trying to pass on his hard won profound knowledge to an uncomprehending audience, while he can live in bliss in a remote retreat . Do not miss this book, because while Dr. Chopra will be around for another 100-150 years, you and I are not going to be sticking around for that long...unless we read his teachings, digest them and act on them.
Unique, Beneficial and Harmonious with Accepted Theories

"Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" by Deepak Chopra, M.D. It covers 342 pages over five parts and five chapters. Before I reviewed this book, I pondered over the one-star reviews. Why would anyone degrade this book, I asked, unless they had some new basis in fact that Dr. Chopra was intentionally trying to mislead his readers. In lieu of what the author does at his seminars, it does not have any bearing on what he wrote. I found nothing in this book that "violated the Hippocratic Oath" or was meant to purposely cause harm. Nothing. I, too, noticed that the author lacked bibliographic references, but upon a deeper reading Dr. Chopra clearly embeds his references right in the main text. On pages 245-246, for example, even as early as this book was written (1993, about when new scientific discoveries were being made about the roles and rhythms of neurotransmitters, hormones and genes and how they are involved in the total life process). I also found nothing that "does harm to a patient" or "places an unfair burden" on him or her. The purpose of this book is nothing more than to offer reasonably coherent philosophical advice, tied in with physiological and psychological processes. There is nothing in "Ageless Body" that is malignant. I also did not see one single inference to the author's allegations about "living to be 200 years old," as one reviewer hastily mentioned. (It really is unhelpful to cite something without a specific location if it mentioned critically; to say anything good leaves more room for generalities). What I did find in this book, in fact, was nothing short of very informative and helpful. So what if it comes off as common sense to some? Does that make the author any less intelligent or unworthy to write about it? No. On the contrary, each of the five parts in this book is explained simply with little pearls of wisdom that are meant to BENEFIT life--not to "take money from a gullible public." If the reader seeks clinical proof, and if actual time is given to an unhasty review, it is clearly PART of the main body text. A basic understanding of liberal arts will also make a significant difference in accepting Dr. Chopra's assertions. They needn't all be taken at face value. As an educated, wise mind thinks, take what you need and leave the rest; don't discard the whole thing as rubbish! What the author really means, I think, with his title of "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" is not the physical body so much as it is the INNER body, or spirit. At once, the ignorant, showing their annoyance and intolerance, cast their objections in the form of a one-star review. Perhaps it is jealousy in that such a person didn't think of writing a book like this first. Whatever the case, Dr. Chopra presents his advice and teachings brilliantly and focused enough, free of religious fanaticism, to the point where a continual sidetrack of footnotes would detract from his subject. From Part One, "The Land Where No One is Old," a captivating title, to Part Five, "Breaking the Spell of Mortality," Dr. Chopra only seeks to enlighten and guide, not to deviate and destroy. I suggest losing the negative frame of mind and opening up. That is the true mark of character. This book deserves the same. Remember, many personas throughout history were mocked and ridiculed in exactly the same way as some people have done here, long before their work was finally recognized as genius. Again, history repeats itself. I suppose, to the uneducated or overzealous, a work such as this is not welcomed in its own time--such as the prophet not recognized in his own land. But I guess some of us are farther ahead than others.

Before venturing off into more mystical writings, Deepak Chopra built his publishing career with a number of best-selling health books, including this one. Chopra writes beautifully - and understandably - about the complex workings of your body, and how your lifestyle and health-related choices affect the aging process. Whether or not you buy into Chopra's contention that lifestyle changes can stop or reverse this process, we from getAbstract recommend that you read this book for its enlightened advice about how to live a healthier - and longer - life.

I was lent Deepak Chopra's Cassette version of this book long ago and approached it anticipating little value. I was wrong; I enjoyed it! For someone who enjoys attacking problems from multiple angles, this work gave me a greater spiritual dimension for my ongoing experiments with mind and body integration.
We all have to start somewhere, and I don't understand the malice of those who expect every book they read to have everything they need. We don't often write for the money; you'd be surprised how little an author makes from each book they sell. I write first for the clarity, and I think Mr. Chopra wrote Ageless Body, Timeless Mind for the right reasons as well.
One key difference between Deepak and history's philosophers is that they are dead and he isn't. Those who can, have to speak. As not all men are philosophy majors and those who are, are not so all at the same time, someone who listens will be at a stage in life where they will get something valuable out of it.
As the author of Moral Armor, I'm beyond it now philosophically, but I feel no need to impune his work. His was one of many stepping stones from the self-help eighties for which I am thankful. |

I thought this book was very good. It specifically talks about the power of our thoughts and words on our reality as well as on aging. It also talks about what one can do to age well and reverse negative signs of aging, such as exercise, diet, meditation, etc. The research and citations back up his ideas thoroughly and prove that aging is very much within our control, more so than most people believe possible.

Deepak Chopra is normally a very good instructor and I have enjoyed some of his other works a great deal. This program had good information however the presentation was monotone and made me tired. I tried to listen to it a few times before I made it all the way through. The rythum that he speaks with on this tape is almost hypnotic and I could hardly stay awake. The information was good and thought provoking. If this is a program you really want, you may want to get the book and avoid the tape or CD. Overall Deepak Chopra is great, this one didn't meet his normal mark. Try his (Seven Laws) CD, it's fantastic.
A word of advice

Reviewer: ,
I had to give this book 3 stars coz it lies midway between what the readers want and what this book is trying to convey. If you are reading any of chopra's books keep a couple of things in mind. 1. "His" Ideas have been around for thousands of years in the books that have been catching dust, in India. What he does is basically add a few new catch words such as "quantum", "Einstein", "spacetime" to present the ideas. I am not sure thats a pretty thing to do coz according to Feynman - Nobody understands Quantum mechanics. The ideas are good, infact very good but naturally we as readers are interested in the immediate practical aspects of it. And thats the problem. Everyone of us creates our own reality. Thats not to say, we create the trees and cars around us, rather we add our own dimension to the whole process of interpreting something, which in turn affects us significantly. And hence no single "way" will apply as a magic key for all of us. And hence you will see why some people rate some books with 5 stars and others with 1 star. Therefore you will not find "7 steps" or "5 steps" or "[my lucky number] steps" to achieve what he says you can. 2. Chopra is basically acting as a attorney trying to make his point that in meditation lies the key to understanding ourselves. Thats all. Nothing more or nothing less. I like his books becoz they present the information which, previously appeared as mumbo-jumbo and difficult to understand, into something concrete and easy to understand. They provide the basics. Meditaion takes a long time.. probably years of continuous effort for the fruits to show. So if you are planning to read the book with an intention of immediate gratification or getting younger quick, you are better off spending the money on a few shots of Vodka and looking at yourself in the mirror.

While I think the book has potential and clearly his concepts seem to have merit the big missing piece is not just knowing good concepts but practicing them. Have you seen this guy lately? Is he the embodiment of health? He is overweight and moves slowly. Advice that can't be practiced by the giver is weak advice. Enough of Deepak and Dr. Phil telling us to how to live healthy when they can't seem to do that themselves.

I believe one of the quotes in this book "People don't grow old. When they stop growing, they become old" illustrates what Chopra is helping to bring in this world of ours. In another way he is explaining what Dr Bruce Lipton has been able to show through science that Epigenetics is what determines how we age and how we will fare with our health. But through meditation, right living and awareness we can live a life of fulfillment that medicine can not offer us. It takes courage to step outside of the traditional paradigm and Chopra does it so well.

I read this book (every single word of it!) when it first came out more than ten years ago. Do I believe everything espoused in Ageless Body, Timeless Mind? No, of course not. I do, however, believe that the power of the mind is all encompassing, and this, I think, is the the message in Dr. Chopra's book. Not a new concept, but one which we seem slow to embrace.
I continue to be inspired by Dr. Chopra. His works are not enjoyed by everyone....so thank Heavens for the library!

Most of the rest of this book offers encouraging insights into the relationship of mind to the rest of the body. Chopra tosses around the occasional unsubstantiated conclusion or generalization, but fortunately most of those are limited to the earlier "quantum" part of the book. Just skim over the hokey misappropriation of particle-physics terminology and enjoy his takes on what you'll recognize as cognitive therapy, self-affirmation and plain old good health sense.

How would it feel to live forever; could you feel young when your body looks old. Your body is aging beyond your control because it has been programmed to live out the rules of collective conditioning. What you need is the body/mind connection. Beginning at age 30, the average human body starts to come unhinged: wrinkles appear, skin loses tone and freshness, muscles sag, fat catches up with muscle, eyesight and hearing taper off. As the bones thin and become brittle and break easily, stamina and endurance decline. You just can't do the things you are used to doing. To transform the patterns of the past, you must know what they are made of and how to stop the progress of deterioration.
We use basic emotions controlled by hormones. "Without the feeling, there is no hormone; without the hormone, there is no feeling. ...there is no pain without nerve signals to transmit pain; there is no relief from pain without endorphins to block the signals. In body-mind medicine, wherever thought goes, a chemical goes with it." Thus, mind and body are inseparable one. Life unfolds as DNA imparts its coded intelligence to its active twin, RNA, which in turn "goes out into the cell and imparts bits of intelligence to thousands of enzymes, which then use their specific bit of intelligence to make proteins."
Medicine has used the mind-body connection for healing; defeating pain is a good example, or merely learning to moderate the chronic pain. "If we could effectively trigger the intention not to age, the body would carry it out automatically." Awareness makes a huge difference, as you can control what you know is happening. If you can free your mind not to relive the past or try to control the future, a space is opened for a completely new experience -- "the experience of ageless body and timeless mind."
Even in the make-believe world of television, age is the issue. In "The West Wing" the fictional president has to go, they say, because the real one is limited to two four-year terms (and he's had the Oval office for seven years already) but the producers of the program are after a younger audience. Of the two possible choices between a 69 year-old male and a Latin fiftish male, it will be younger to play like he lives in the White House. "Our past intentions can be changed and reawakened at any time. Long before you get old, you can prevent such losses by consciously programming your mind to remain youthful, using the power of your intention."
More recent books by Dr. Chopra include PEACE IS THE WAY: BRINGING WAR AND VIOLENCE TO AN END IN OUR TIME, THE COSMIC MIND AND SUBMANIFEST ORDER OF BEING and THE BOOK OF SECRETS: UNLOCKING THE HIDDEN DIMENSIONS OF YOUR LIFE. |

I respond to the reviews below, stating there is no practicality to the novel. The paradigm of information to usefull, depends on how intellectual and closed minded we are. Aging is thought of as a physical manisfestation, so one must realize that one's disbelief will make one's mind think that aging is purely physical. BUt what makes me know this for sure, well knowledge from (quote)Above(unquote) and those I have met (quote)200 years old(unquote). So in the book, there are dozens of hard to believe stories, so the questions lies in your stronghold of disbelief. Just let go of what's hindering you...sorry to be so vague and so self evident u know, I write forever.
WORD GAMES

AGELESS BODY is Deepak's attempt to neutralize the word "old" as in old age. The writer has a knack for making common words, like "body, "mind" and "self," into profound concepts. His technique is to overlay his abstract ideas with suggestive experimental studies. But ambiguity in interpreting these studies abound.
If you like poetry, Deepak may be your read: "The billions of changes occurring in our cells are only the passing scenery of life; (P. 36)" Or try to interpret this one: "The emptiness at the core of every atom is the womb of the universe; in the flicker of thought when two neurons interact there is an opportunity for a new world to be born. (P.40)"
At times he attributes to cells and DNA a creative intelligence to direct their own construction and at other times his designer is invisible. He would make a great spokesman for the current hocus pocus over "intelligent design." He can't accept the growth of any cell, even a plant cell, without an intelligence involved. He mentions and attacks evolution only one time on P. 115, asserting that the growth of a cell could never be a random process.
Deepak ends up in the very same thought circle as every other writer who tries to explain life in scientific terms: Intelligence is a self organizing entity and every cell evolved is only intelligence having a conversation with itself. Whether your word game tosses in the word "quantum" or not doesn't change much. What a solipsistic thought; what a solipsistic world. I wonder if his readers who actually experienced the oneness Deepak speaks of wouldn't, after awhile, go insane? |

Rating this book 1 star may seem unfair: After all, there is much valuable information, and a good bit of superficial representation of dr. Chopra`s Indian heritage. But my reasons for giving a low evaluation: - There is a painstaking process going on in medical circles, where the establishment gradually learns to accept new (or maybe rather ancient!) approaches to health, from vegeatbles/antioxydants to meditation. Books like this is an insult to research-oriented doctors, abounding with unsubstantiated claims - and it closes many scientific minds to looking into the potential of meditation to keep and regain health, given dr. Chopra`s fame, fortune and public standing, which obscures the view of workers of more substance, like dr. Dossey. In other words, dr. Chopra is doing the slow-working, more humble-minded doctors that work in the alternative field a disservice and is slowing down the rapprochement between the medical establishment and those who use meditation, sound and the like. - In doing so, he is selling false hopes and capitalising on people`s fear of death, becoming one of the richest doctors in history in the process. Is it not better to learn to accept aging and prepare for death? I have met many people who have bought Chopra`s books and attended his workshops, but none who have had a fraction of the effects of his methods that he claims. Where is the ethical aspect in this? - Having worked with a large number of cancer patients through the years, following their fears and struggles, it seems like an insult to ordinary humble workers to say "Reprogram your quantum mind and get rid of the cancer". If Chopra could show one case of a person who could do this, including himself, I`d be willing to change my view of this as a condescending way to treat suffering humans who need compassion and good palliative care, not easy solutions that give the responsibility to the patient, whereas the doctor stands with no soil of the human factor on his hands. This is a travesty of the Hippocratic ideal, and will strengthen the view of alternative doctors as superficial, money-loving peddlers of false hopes. 1 star rating is inevitable, I hate to say. Luckily, there are many good sources of the same knowledge that Chopra embezzles. (Hope I haven`t been too harsh, I have no wish to attack Chopra, but I wish to strengthen a more substantial approach to the issues of aging, health and dying).
Dangerous Quackery

Dr. Chopra is a dangerous quack. Essentially, he promises what quacks through the ages had always promised: eternal life - IF you buy his book, and "quantum medicine" products. It's the same deal every medical con man did: your money for his groundless promises. This con works for the same reason other cons work: people are afraid of death and old age, and are willing to believe anybody who promises them they can be avoided. Do not let Dr. Chopra's scientific-sounding "quantum mechanics explanation" of how he can give us eternal life fool you. Quantum Mechanical terms are in common use by con men as a rationale for their snake oil, because a). Few people understand quamntum mechanics, and b). Most people heard some vague things about how QM "says" that "our "consciosness creates reality". Let me put it this way: IT JUST AIN'T SO, JOE. Contrary to what Chopra and others tell you, QM does *not* say we can "create our reality" as we please, or change the world just by thinking about it. It's just a ruse to make the potential sucker... er, I mean, "customers" - think Chopra's snake oil is "based on science". It isn't. The most convincing argument against Chopra's claims is Chopra himself. Look at recent pictures of Chopra. Now look at pictures of Chopra from 10 and 20 years ago. Surprise, surprise - Mr. "Ageless Bodies", the messiah of eternal life, is aging along just like the rest of us, if not faster. If what he claims works, how come Chopra looks *precisely* his age, and not significantly younger? I though this stuff was based on quantum mechanics... how can it fail to work for him? I would not have bothered warning people if all the effect Chopra's quackery had was convincing some gullible people that they could live forever and making a few bucks from them. The danger of Chopra is that those who truly believe his nonsense are in great danger of not getting conventional, effective treatment when they are seriosly ill. People who try to cure themselves using Chopra's "mind medicine" could avoid conventional treatment until it is too late, and significantly destroy their health or even die. Try Chopra at your own risk.

Attacking the so-called teachings of people like Dr. Chopra is a thankless task. Specifically, they mean well (unless of course they're just capitalizing on the public's desire to find meaning in their lives, and live longer and better lives.) It's a pity that Chopra doesn't substantiate any of his claims with data. He tries, but fails because he can't; and in so doing he tries to affiliate his ideas with revolutionary thought in physics and biology. He'd like the audience believe that his thinking is a natural outgrowth of theories proposed by such luminaries as Einstein, Schrodinger, etc.. Nothing could be further from the truth. Then again, perhaps Dr. Chopra is nothing more than a New Age snake oil salesman, and a spin-off of the '60s cult-of-gurus, appealing primarily to aging boomers who are desperately trying to give life meaning beyond science. Given the fact that Dr. Chopra is charging upwards of $700 per person (as of the early '90s) to dispense a "primal sound" compatible with that person, I suspect that his motives are about as murky as his thinking.
Tired Book, Careless Author

I wanted to like this book, but was sorely disapointed. Most of the studies cited were either irrelevant or suffered from cronic statistical manipulation. He talks about people being able to live "... up to two hundred years old..." with basically no proof. In fact, most evidence is to the contrary. There are quite a few enlightened people in the world (many Buddist monks) but none of them live that long. Even the people cited in the book as "masters" all died before they reached 100. We need a book with new thinking, not recycled mumbo-jumbo.
Ageless, I think NOT!!!

Tonight I saw Mr. Chopra on television. I was stunned at seeing a man who hardly looked healthy never mind younger or ageless!!! Common folks, put two and two together. Why can't he produce the effects he promises and makes you pay for such empty promises. My Dr. friend was correct about Chopra finding a way to milk folks for tons of money!
The shocking part was the man who carries an air of such lofty spirituality displayed little spirituality on the TV. He was not only bloated looking but so was his attitude, full of criticism for Western thought, Christianity, America's foreign policy etc. I am not saying we are perfect or there isn't room for criticism but he was full of criticism with nothing good to say about what is worth acknowleging at the Western culture. He had to set himself up as the one voice of enlightenment....it sells more books, healing appts, lecturers, etc.
I copied a portion of what another reviewer wrote because it shows the level of superiority in attitude and the traversty of such actions upon real dialouge, the kind of arrogance that came across by Chopra on tv tonight. Before finishing want to say, It's ok to want to make a fortune only don't wear false spirituality to do so. In the early 70's I went to the Marharishi (?) Meditation Center in NY where they charged $200 for the mantra, the same mantra they undoubtedly recycled a billizion times, asking the initiate not to share the secret mantra! I was so young and naive. Then there was Baghwan (?) with the fleet of Roll Royces and a hefty bank acct. He had followers hand over the deeds to their homes for the price of enlightenment, of course they did so willing based on what they were made to believe! That guy feed into the human desire of some, to let go and feel it was ok to do whatever they want...endless sex, drugs etc...no judgment. All this done in the name of being more spiritual, enlightened than the rest of us! Chicanery comes in many forms, only in searching for the NEW often people ignore the obvious deception that is right in front of them. End
